April 2022 Update

On April 15, 2022, the Canadian government released the latest GHG emissions report that adds 2020 emissions to the data. Reported emissions are down 8% from 2019, falling from 730 to 672 Mt CO2e. This new data, combined with data from CRE’s Canada Energy Future 2021 and Stats Canada, form the basis of the charts below.

The dramatic drop in emissions is mostly due to the reduced economic activity that resulted from the Covid-19 pandemic. Most forecasts are predicting a return back to level slightly below those seen before the pandemic.
